Flip damp hair over and dry completely, scrunching for texture. Then, wrap 1-inch sections around the barrel of a 2-inch curling iron—but hold the bottom inch of hair out instead of clamping in the iron. "Curled tresses with straight ends is cool and unexpected," Fugate says. One more thing: point the curling iron straight up toward the ceiling (as opposed to holding it on the horizontal)—this makes curls look ropy instead of like ringlets. Separate curls with your fingers and finish with a touch of styling wax.
