Microcontroller Integrates NFC

The first product in the RF20 series of microcontrollers, the RF21S from Renesas Electronics, combines on a single chip a NFC (near-field communication)controller supporting the ISO/IEC 18092 international standard with secure element functionality to enable financial transaction, transit system and ID cards in mobile phones, computers and peripherals. The use of on-wafer packaging has resulted in a microcontroller that is only 0.22mm thick. The single device integrates the company's RS-4 secure NFC controller and eliminates the need for communication with an external secure element, shortening the time required for gate transactions in transit systems. It is planned that the device will also support MiFare. EMVCo security certification is expected to be obtained. The company will supply developers with the software, i.e. communication library and host controller interface needed to implement NFC functionality. Support will also be available from third-party vendors for middleware.
